How It Works
How defined bacterial consortia work
1. Oral administration in capsule form
Vedanta’s defined bacterial consortia therapeutics are easily administered in capsules that contain freeze-dried bacteria in powder form. We manufacture these bacteria in our state-of-the-art facilities that are fully compliant with Current Good Manufacturing Practices and then process them into convenient oral capsule formulations for administration to patients.
2. Colonization of the intestine
The capsules containing the bacterial consortia are protected from stomach acid and travel down the intestine, where they dissolve. The freeze-dried bacteria inside the capsules can then “wake up”, expand in number, and colonize the intestine. Unlike over-the-counter probiotics, our defined consortia are based on dominant, abundant bacterial dwellers of the human intestine. As our bacteria colonize the intestine, they can shift the overall composition of the gut microbiota and restore a healthy homeostatic state.
3. Stimulation of targeted immune responses
Our bacterial consortia can stimulate a range of immune responses, including immunoregulatory responses, which seek to ratchet down the overactive state that is often seen in the setting of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
Defined Bacterial Consortia
We are developing oral therapies using defined bacterial consortia to treat a wide range of debilitating diseases with an initial focus on gastrointestinal (GI) diseases.
Clinical Trials
Vedanta is conducting clinical trials in inflammatory bowel disease and recurrent Clostridium difficile to evaluate the efficacy and safety of potential drug candidates.
